Alphaliner's latest statistics: Global container shipping capacity increased by 19%

Alphaliner, a French shipping consultancy, recently released its latest statistics at its headquarters in Paris. Since the beginning of this year, the global container ship loading capacity has increased by 19% to 13.8 million TEUs. The increase is mainly due to the delivery of new ships and the re-use of idle cargo ships.

In addition to the 8.4 percent drop in the capacity of the Japanese cruise ship in the past eight months, the shipping capacity of all major liner companies this year has increased.

Mediterranean Shipping (MSC), the second largest liner company, has been active in the leasing market. Coupled with lower freight rates in the first half of this year, the MSC gained a lot and its capacity increased by 282,000 TEUs from the beginning of the year, an increase of 19%. MSC expects to add 13 new vessels with a capacity of 14,000 TEUs this year, 8 of which have already been delivered. The company has also signed a one-year contract with Maersk Line in recent days. It rents 4 ships at a daily rental of USD 24,000. A cargo vessel with a capacity of 4,170 TEUs is used to strengthen the Asia-South Africa route.
