HK PolyU’s R&D of fiber-optic sensing railway monitoring system adopted overseas

[China Instrument Network Instrument Research and Development] The Hong Kong Polytechnic University signed an agreement with Singapore SMRT in February this year to install a fiber-optic sensing railway monitoring system developed by PolyU in two subway lines in Singapore. In addition to the installation of fiber-optic sensor networks to monitor trains, PolyU is also installing sensors on trains to monitor train tracks. The new system has just completed trial operation in June and is now installing a permanent monitoring system. It is expected that the project will be completed in early 2017.

In order to ensure traffic safety and improve transportation efficiency, it is particularly important to check the real-time, stability, and accuracy of driving conditions. At present, the monitoring of the state of the line mainly depends on manual and rail car inspections at home and abroad, and cannot be monitored in real time.

PolyU took the lead in the use of optical fiber sensors to continuously monitor rails. It is the world's first, and a total of six groups of sensors will be installed on the rails and trains of the Singapore East and West Rail Lines (SMRT), namely the Singapore Metro Network. The busiest route. Optical fiber sensing technology can accurately detect pressure, temperature, vibration, speed, displacement, distance and other parameters, with high accuracy and high sensitivity.

Professor Tan Huayao, chair of the PolyU Optoelectronics Lecture and Department of Electrical Engineering, said that PolyU’s export of fiber-optic sensor networks to provide unprecedented health monitoring for key components of overseas subway lines is proud.
