The automobile industry has emerged as a dilemma in the differentiation of passenger cars and commercial vehicles

Wu Xinmin, head of the Economic Operation Department of the Provincial Economic Commission, said that since the beginning of this year, the state of the automobile industry in the province has been operating smoothly and passenger vehicles have developed rapidly under the conditions of national macroeconomic regulation, energy price hikes, overcapacity and market competition.

Statistics show that from January to February, the province produced 38,600 passenger vehicles, an increase of 48.0%. What is particularly gratifying is that the province’s auto industry has turned profitable after a negative profit growth in the previous year. In the first two months, it achieved a profit of 369 million yuan, a year-on-year increase of 38.9%.

The provincial machinery and automotive industry investment promotion center analyzed that the increase in profits of the auto industry was mainly due to adjustments in the business strategies of auto manufacturers. Through continuous improvement of management, adjustment of product structure, and continuous introduction of new models, the company’s profitability has improved, which has changed in one fell swoop. In the previous year, the auto industry did not increase production, and corporate profits entered a rising channel.

In sharp contrast with the rapid development of passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles have experienced a sharp decline. According to statistics, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle Company (Shiyan District) produced 13,922 vehicles in the first two months of this year, a year-on-year decrease of 45.6%; and sales of 11,011 were down 38.6% year-on-year.

The truck is a traditional model of our province and it occupies a large proportion in the province's automobile product structure, and its market share ranks first in the country. As the country's GDP and investment growth this year are expected to decline year-on-year, coupled with continued rise in fuel prices, transportation costs will increase, and the demand for trucks will decrease. At the same time, the production capacity of domestic trucks, especially heavy-duty vehicles, has expanded and excess capacity has led to an increasingly fierce competition in the truck market. Wu Xinmin said that due to the sharp decline in commercial vehicles, the growth rate of the automotive industry in our province has been below the national average for the first time in recent years.

The automobile is a major pillar industry in our province. To achieve the province's full-year industrial growth target, the automobile industry needs to maintain a certain growth rate. At present, provincial automobile manufacturers are accelerating the pace of industrial restructuring. Shenlong and Dongfeng Honda continue to introduce new models. Among them, Shenlong’s “Triumph” and Dongfeng Honda’s “Civic” will be launched at the end of April. T21 will be launched at the end of the year. At the same time, Dongfeng Company has accelerated the technological transformation of medium-heavy vehicles.

As the country has included automobiles as an overcapacity industry in the regulatory object and the market competition has become increasingly fierce, the development of the automobile industry will face many difficulties. Wu Xinmin suggested that we must formulate policies to support the development of the automobile industry as soon as possible, and at the same time do a good job of coordination and service work for the development of the automobile industry, reverse the rapid decline in the commercial vehicle market, and promote the accelerated development of the auto parts industry.
